Kirk's profitable elk hunt

Kirk picked up a left-over spike tag in July so that he could get the opportunity to hunt in a unit that he will draw a branch bull tag in the next few years. He thought this would be a great way to scout out the unit for the future branch bull tag. He and a buddy went to the Walla Walla unit in the North Central Blue Mountains of Oregon.

Kirk hunted for 5 days and saw elk every day.He was able to kill this spike bull on the 5th morning. He resisted shooting the huge bull standing next to this spike!

Kirk shot it on a 70% slope and, thankfully, the elk rolled only twice and not all of the way to the bottom. He had to bone the elk out to pack the meat to the top. He was very appreciative of his strong young friend to help him pack the elk out.

Unfortunately, Kirk's buddy wasn't that good of a photographer...most of the pictures have grass in the way and you can hardly see the elk...much to Kirk's dismay! Here is a better picture that Kirk took of his friend with the elk that Kirk shot.
Now our freezer is full of steaks, burger, and breakfast sausage! YUM!
